Peru destroyed more than 37 makeshift runways in the Amazon last week in a bid to stop small planes smuggling cocaine out of the world's top producer.

Security forces plan to wipe out 58 so-called narco runways by tomorow - a record number in such a short period of time.

The runways, carved into remote rainforest, help move tonnes of cocaine out of Peru each year. Most of it goes to Bolivia then Brazil, the world's second-biggest cocaine consumer after the US, and to Europe and Asia. Between 150 and 180 tonnes of cocaine were moved out of Peru by small aircraft last year, the US estimates.
