Berlusconi vows to stay in politics

Former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said yesterday he will stay in politics following his conviction in a Milan court for tax fraud.

He said he felt "obliged to stay in the field" to protect other Italians from what he called judicial injustices.

Berlusconi condemned as "unreal" his tax fraud conviction and said it was the result of "politicised" judges who have made Italy unliveable and no longer a democracy. He was sentenced to four years in prison on Friday but it was cut to one year and he remains free until all appeals are exhausted.
