Blaze rips through mediaeval Aleppo

HISTORICAL sites in Aleppo, Syria, have been destroyed by fire following battles between rebels and government troops.

The blaze yesterday ripped through mediaeval souks in the city, which is a Unesco world heritage site.

The city has become a focus of the insurgency against Bashar al-Assad's regime, with constant fighting and shelling over the past two months.
