THE boss of a New Zealand coal mine where 29 people, including two Scots, died after an explosion, has pled not guilty to labour violation charges.

Malcolm Campbell, 25, of Cameron, near St Andrews and Pete Rodger, from Perth, were among those who perished after a series of gas explosions underground at the Pike River coal mine on South Island on November 19, 2010.

The mine's chief executive, Peter Whittall, faces 12 charges including failing to manage methane levels and ventilation in the mine. If convicted he could face a maximum fine of NZ$250,000 (£128,000).
