Cardinal Leonardo Sandri, 69, an Argentine and past No.2 in the Vatican bureaucracy, will wield great influence in the choice of the man to succeed Pope Benedict XVI.
At present, women, mostly nuns, can only fill the role of under-secretary in Vatican departments, the No.3 post after president and secretary.
