Children killed in holiday attacks

A bombing near a playground and other insurgent attacks killed 18 people including several children in Iraq yesterday, challenging government efforts to promote a sense of stability by preventing attacks during the Eid al-Adha holiday.

The attacks underscored the difficulties facing Iraq's leadership in keeping its citizens safe.

The deadlier of two explosions in Baghdad was near a playground and a small market in Bawiya in the east of the city. Eight people died, including four children. More than 20 people were wounded.
