Cope joins party leadership race

PARIS: Jean-Francois Cope has entered the race to head France's UMP, setting up a contest with former Prime Minister Francois Fillon as the centre-right party tries to unite around a new leader after its defeat by the Socialists this year.

A poll last week showed former budget minister Cope was backed by 24% of the party's supporters.
