A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck 35 miles southeast of Palu on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi yesterday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The quake was originally reported by the USGS as having a magnitude of 6.5. Its depth was reported at 12.5 miles.

The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said a destructive tsunami was not generated by the earthquake and that the Japan Meteorological Agency may issue additional information on the quake.
