Earthquake strikes New Zealand

A strong earthquake struck off the west coast of New Zealand's North Island yesterday, but there were no reports of major damage or injury.

The 7.0-magnitude quake was centred 100 miles north-west of Wellington at a depth of 142 miles, the GeoNet website reported. The US Geological Service initially measured the tremor at 6.2.

The quake was felt throughout central New Zealand, leaving many residents shaken, but there was only minor damage.
