Food index highlights divisions

PEOPLE in the US and advanced nations consume an average of 1200 calories per day more than those in low-income countries, but even wealthy nations' food lacks micro-nutrients, a report said yesterday.

The Global Food Security Index found the US, Denmark, Norway and France led the world in food security. The least secure nations were in sub-Saharan Africa, including Ethiopia, Rwanda and Nigeria.

The index aims to rank food security by looking at such things as affordability, availability, nutritional quality and safety.

DuPont, a developer of genetically altered crops, commissioned the index to identify where reforms were most needed.
