Giraffe killed despite appeals

A bid to save a young giraffe from destruction at Copenhagen Zoo has failed. The animal was put down yesterday morning.

Thousands had signed a petition appealing for a change of heart over the two-year-old called Marius. The zoo said it had no choice but to avoid in-breeding. Parts of the carcass have been fed to lions and others will be used for research.
