Hezbollah will not face sanctions

Bulgaria's new interim prime minister said yesterday he would not initiate any move to impose European Union sanctions on Hezbollah – even though the country had implicated the Islamist movement in a bombing at a Black Sea resort.

Marin Raikov's move is likely to be seen as a concession to opposition groups, which have argued Bulgaria could suffer more attacks if it takes the lead in blacklisting Hezbollah.

Last week, the European Commission said the EU would consider sanctions on Hezbollah, but did not yet have sufficient evidence of its activities in Europe to decide.
