Werner Franz, believed to be the last surviving crew member of the Hindenburg airship disaster 77 years ago, has died.

Historian John Provan, a friend, said that Franz died on August 13 in Frankfurt.

His widow, Annerose Franz, said he died of heart failure aged 92.

Franz was a cabin boy on the Hindenburg, making three journeys before the disaster in which he survived "without a scratch on him".

The hydrogen-filled airship caught fire and crashed in New Jersey, killing 35 people on board in 1937.
