Marchers support US adoption ban

Thousands of people have marched through Moscow in an orderly show of support for a ban on adoptions of Russian children by Americans, echoing President Vladimir Putin's demands for better care for orphans in their homeland.

Activists mixed bitter criticism of the United States with calls for improvements to Russia's own care system. Police said 12,000 people joined the rally, and organisers denied claims some were coerced or paid to attend. In January, Russian toddler Max Shatto died in Texas, the home of his adoptive parents, increasing tensions between the two countries.
