Militants attack security building

Islamist militants attacked Egypt's security headquarters in northern Sinai with a barrage of mortar bombs and machinegun fire and fought police elsewhere in the desert region, wounding three conscripts.

The militants climbed on to the roofs of buildings across from the headquarters building in al-Arish and fired rocket-propelled grenades. Machinegun battles were still being fought yesterday in the streets around the building.

About 30 armoured personnel carriers backed by helicopters fought militants in the town of Sheikh Zuwaid, 18.6 miles east of al Arish on the Mediterranean coast.
