Obama warns on budget cuts deal

President Barack Obama said it may take a couple of weeks or a couple of months to reach a deal to end Washington's battle over spending cuts.

The US president spoke after a brief meeting with congressional leaders at the White House on $85 billion (£56bn) in automatic spending cuts that went into effect yesterday.

Mr Obama said the cuts were "dumb and arbitrary" and he blamed them on Republicans in Congress.
