French police arrested an officer yesterday whom they suspect of stealing 115lb of cocaine, worth around €2 million (£1.6m), from a locked room inside central police headquarters in Paris.

On Friday, police discovered that the cocaine, which was seized in a raid in July and then kept in a locker inside the headquarters overlooking the Seine river, had disappeared.

Security camera footage helped investigators to identify a man entering the drugs squad's quarters as a member of the Paris anti-drugs unit. He was tracked down and arrested in southern France.
