Pope's butler evidence rejected

THE Pope's former butler, who is accused of stealing Vatican documents, suffered a blow on the first day of his trial when judges refused to admit evidence.

Paolo Gabriele's lawyers asked the court to allow evidence from cardinals who probed the "Vatileaks" scandal for Pope Benedict.

However, judges said they would rely on evidence from the Vatican police and prosecutor.

Gabriele was arrested in May after police found confidential documents in his apartment. The 46-year-old claimed he had leaked documents to expose "evil and corruption".
