new york: Petrol rationing has been imposed on New York in the wake of superstorm Sandy, meaning motorists can only fill their cars every other day.
Deliveries of fuel and repairs have been hampered in New York and New Jersey, with around 750,000 people left in cold and darkness after a blanket of snow snapped storm-weakened trees and downed power lines.
A new petrol rationing plan was put in place yesterday, with police on forecourts to enforce the new system in New York City and on Long Island.
New York mayor Michael Bloomberg said: "This is designed to let everybody have a fair chance, so the lines aren't too oppressive and that we can get through this."
Residents who have been without powers for days are demanding investigations into utility companies they say are not working fast enough. John Monticello of Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey, said: "We lost power last week, just got it back for a day or two, and now we lost it again."
At the peak, more than 8.5 million homes and businesses across 21 states lost power.
