Renamed metro line is EU tribute

The European Union's reputation may be taking a battering from the debt crisis, but Brussels can at least be grateful for a vote of confidence from its newest and poorest member, Bulgaria.

Councillors in Sofia, the country's capital, have voted to rename one of the stops on its new metro line "European Union" in a gesture of thanks for help with financing the project. The EU is paying more than 80% of the 1 billion levs (£400 million) costs for the second line of the Sofia underground. Bulgaria has a history of renaming streets, factories, schools and even towns.
