On the eve of India's general election, even some members of the ruling Congress party appear to have accepted it will not return to power, raising question marks over the future of its leader, Rahul Gandhi.

The frontrunner to become prime minister after the five-week election is Narendra Modi, leader of opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), although opinion polls suggest he will need to form a coalition. The last major poll before the election had the BJP and its allies winning up to 246 seats in the 543-member parliament.
