Senior al-Qaeda commander killed

Chadian soldiers in Mali have killed Mokhtar Belmokhtar, a senior commander for al-Qaeda's north African wing, during an attack on an Islamist rebel base yesterday.

Chadian armed forces spokesman General Zacharia Gobongue said: "Forces operating in northern Mali destroyed a terrorist base. The toll included several dead terrorists, including their leader Mokhtar Belmokhtar."

Belmokhtar was a veteran al-Qaeda leader said to have ordered January's attack on an Algerian gas plant where 37 hostages were killed.
