ELECTION officials have banned 10 candidates from Egypt's presidential poll.

They include former spy chief Omar Suleiman, Muslim Brotherhood's Khairat al-Shater, and longstanding opposition leader Ayman Nour.

Officials said the 10 did not meet the conditions for candidacy, but did not give details. The candidates have 48 hours to appeal.

Thirteen candidates remain for the elections in May, more than a year after Hosni Mubarak was ousted.

The country is still governed by a military council, but parliamentary elections have already taken place.
