the reaction to austerity 4: greece

THE leaders of Greece's three biggest parties will meet today in a last-ditch attempt to form a government and avoid fresh elections.

President Karolos Papoulias called the talks after Socialist leader Evangelos Venizelos became the last of the three party leaders to acknowledge he had failed to assemble a coalition.

Without a government to negotiate a new aid tranche from the European Union and International Monetary Fund, Greece risks bankruptcy in weeks and potential ejection from the euro.
