Theatre cancels Jesus rock opera

ROCK opera Jesus Christ Superstar has been axed by a Russian theatre after religious protests.

Andrew Lloyd Webber's popular musical was due to be staged by a Russian company at the Rostov Philharmornic next month, but a group of local Orthodox Christians objected.

The cancellation baffled members of the cast and commentators, with popular Russian blogger Rustem Adagamov blaming the move on "Orthodox philistines".
