By tradition, a crucifix is thrown into a lake or river and it is believed that the person who retrieves it will then be healthy and freed from evil spirits throughout the year.
The celebration of Epiphany, or the Apparition of Christ, as Bulgarians call it, began in Sofia yesterday with a water-blessing ceremony.
