WHO declares ebola emergency

The World Health Organisation urged nations to help stop the spread of ebola as it declared the current outbreak in West Africa to be an international emergency.

The outbreak, the longest recorded for the disease, has killed at least 961 people, according to the UN health agency.

The Nigerian government has declared a national emergency. President Goodluck Jonathan approved spending £7 million to fight the disease and urged schools to extend holidays to give experts more time to assess the threat.
