AN exclusive investigative story broken last weekend by the Sunday Herald and written by our African affairs writer, Fred Bridgland, has had newspapers across South Africa rushing to follow up its findings.

Bridgland's account of how the bodies of two youths will be exhumed by South African prosecuting authorities next month, reopening a 24-year-old mystery which put Winnie Mandela in the frame for their murders, was also picked up by newspapers around the world, from The Sydney Morning Herald to the Washington Post to The Guardian in London. However, it was in South Africa that the story had the most resonance. Newspapers, online sites and broadcasters all followed it up,

The two youths at the centre of the story, Lolo Sono and Sibuniso Tshabalala, were last seen, seemingly severely beaten, with Mrs Mandela in her Soweto home in November 1988. Until September this year, South African authorities have denied any knowledge of their whereabouts.
