I visited Edinburgh Waverley station ticket office on May 18 to be told it was not able to make bookings on the seated portion of the 4.50am Caledonian Sleeper to Fort William and suggested I phone ScotRail or use the internet.

This proved impossible.

The four-coach rolling stock provided for the service from Glasgow Queen Street to Oban and Mallaig is wholly inadequate.

On May 19 the 8.21am service was full and standing as it departed and then one of the only two toilets on board failed. The trains had no air conditioning and not enough space for luggage and bicycles.

It cannot be right that the line that has been voted the most scenic in the world is provided with the worst trains in Scotland. Surely a journey lasting more than five hours and attracting tourists from all over the world justifies the best possible trains? I appreciate that trains cannot be procured at the drop of a hat but could they not be transferred from shorter routes?
