It was with great anticipation that our family turned up at the newly opened Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome at the weekend to take in the UCI Cycling World Cup.
Unfortunately our excitement turned to dismay and frustration. On arriving at the venue in good time we were greeted by signs informing us there was no spectator parking – despite the website stating there were more than 400 spaces. A steward informed us there was parking at Celtic Park, which was when things got worse.
London Road was shut so it was impossible to access the main entrance to Celtic Park from the west side and the next entrance was fenced off. Being unfamiliar with the area we followed our noses, skirting as close to the stadium as possible before finding a dirt car park on the east side of the football stadium. We reluctantly left our car in the car park without the reassurance of security cameras or personnel and made our way on foot to the velodrome.
While excuses may be offered that it is early days or work is still progressing, this is surely not good enough. This was the World Cup, an event drawing thousands of visitors from far and wide. While I'm sure things will be better in 2014, this was a logistical failure which reflected poorly on the organisers and caused inconvenience to hundreds.
