I recently put out our bird feeders, cleaned and filled for the onset of winter.

A couple of hours later, my wife mentioned she had noticed a bird she had not seen before. After describing it to me I was certain what she had seen was a nuthatch. Later that morning the bird returned and it was indeed a nuthatch. I would be interested to know if this was an unusual sighting as I was not aware their range extended to the west of Scotland. We have also seen the return of an almost all white goldfinch which appeared last winter.
