It was with deep sadness that I read in Catriona Stewart's column that Coatbridge Library was closed (" Think library, think books", The Herald, January 5).

We knew it as the Carnegie Library on Church Street.

I was brought up in a village not far from Coatbridge. When I was at primary school I used the children's section regularly, when my mother took me there once or twice a week and at secondary school, in Coatbridge, I used the senior section. I would borrow and read two to three books a week.

I read and enjoyed many well-known authors, including the classics.

I also discovered science and developed my love for it, to the extent that my life has been involved with science, mostly as a teacher.
