I DO not understand why Jack Webster queries the facts on reported increase of SNP membership and falling nationwide support (Letters, January 11).

Correlation between party membership and public support does not need to reconcile. I would suggest most political parties are presently experiencing a downward turn both in membership and public support. Many citizens have become switched off from the constant bickering of elected persons who seem more intent on securing their own futures than looking after the interests of those they purport to serve.

However, as a disenchanted non-SNP person I have to concede any party with a 30% public support position must be fairly relaxed despite any queries on its actual current paid-up membership.
