I WOULD like to make a small correction to the letter from Allan C Steele about the origins of the character Smarty Grandpa in the first edition of the Dandy (January 18).

The prototype versions of Joe and Daphne Broon appeared in the very first Broons strip, which was published in the Sunday Post in March 1936, while an early version of Granpaw Broon turned up in September of the same year, well over a year before the publication of the first Dandy.

Both strips were drawn, of course, by the legendary Dudley D Watkins, so it is not such a surprise that certain characters should share particular characteristics, particularly as the Dandy was targeted at a broader UK readership than the more specifically Scottish Broons and Oor Wullie.
