YOU report that Scotland is top of the potholes league ("Scottish roads worst in UK", The Herald, February 13).

Going back in time we had that problem sorted in Carluke.

In doing research for our forthcoming Carluke Jam Festival (celebrating our jam heritage with jam-sessions) I discovered courtesy of our local councillor David Shearer that the auld Wishaw-Carluke road (now disused) was called the Jeely-Jar road.

Why? Because the many potholes would be filled in with broken clay jeely-jars from the jeely-jam factories in Carluke and the Law.
