Many years ago, before privatisation was thought about, I wanted to buy a rail ticket in Munich Central Station using a German Railcard.

The ticket seller said: "I can sell you the ticket you asked for but I am obliged by law to inform you about the cheapest fare available, which is less than you would pay with your railcard."

The obligation in what is essentially a monopoly situation should be on the seller not the buyer.

The same could apply to the energy suppliers if our politicians were willing to legislate suitably.
