THE marketing slogan says People Make Glasgow. Well, Glasgow's people certainly made the 2014 Commonwealth Games the success they were.

Team Scotland's triumphant athletes yesterday paraded through the city to give thanks to ordinary Glaswegians for their extraordinary support.

Scottish fans excelled themselves as never before this summer, offering encouragement to those flying the flag for Scotland and to competitors from across the world, especially those from poor nations which could not bring their support with them. This was the true Commonwealth spirit.

Yesterday's parade was a fitting finale to our magnificent summer of sport. It culminated at George Square where 5,000 guests greeted athletes such as swimmers Hannah Miley, Ross Murdoch and Dan Wallace.

Half of this crowd were made up of the real heroes who helped make Glasgow's Commonwealth Games the best ever: the army of volunteers. These Clydesiders deserve to take their bow.

They came to embody all that was best about the Games. Their enthusiasm and optimism must be allowed to live on.
