KEN Smith expresses some trepidation lest his caption to the photograph of a locomotive under construction in Glasgow may be called in question by some "train enthusiast" ("Taking the air and enjoying the view poolside", The Herald, April 25).Well, yes: sorry. The date of the picture must have been 1924, not 1942. Between August and December of that year NB Loco delivered 20 of Sir Nigel Gresley's A1 (later A3) class Pacifics to the London and North Eastern Railway. While these locomotives had a very long service life, the only member of the class surviving today is the (Doncaster-built) Flying Scotsman.
