So an independent inquiry is to take place to seek an explanation for the pitch invasion at the end of the Scottish Cup Final. You can bet your football boots that, when it reports and the dust settles, none of the blame will be attached to the most glaringly obvious contributory factor, namely the segregation of supporters.

I remember the "good old days" when segregation was only applied at Old Firm encounters. When this practice was extended to other matches, spectators were released from the need to treat opposing supporters with any measure of discipline, respect and self-control.

I was fortunate to attend the St Mirren v Partick Thistle cup tie on January 8. St Mirren are to be commended for having a non-segregated section that day where supporters were able to wear team colours, mingle and enjoy each other's company in an atmosphere of total cordiality.
