WITH reference to John Gammidge’s letter (July 4) every Glasgow Underground station has flights of stairs as well as, or instead of, escalators. The problem of disabled access would be alleviated, if not completely solved, if Strathclyde Partnership for Transport installed a domestic-type stairlift on each flight, as I saw years ago on the Budapest Metro.

JOHN Cammidge rightly points out the inadequacy of disabled access to the Glasgow Underground, especially at the new Partick station, and the token gesture of one subway station north and south of the river with a lift.

I would suggest however that his idea of an urgent rethink by the SPT is about 40 years too late. The only real opportunity for major refurbishment or even extension was in the 1970s when the system was closed and virtually rebuilt.

Only the people in charge then know why better access wasn't provided at least at some stations. Perhaps the plans were limited by a transport budget more interested in motorways.
