A FLYER has dropped through our letterbox. It is an invitation to attend a planning appeal hearing that the Scottish Government has arranged following an appeal to it from developers after a unanimous rejection by East Dunbartonshire Council to build 140 houses on greenbelt land in our village of Torrance.

I could go into the inadequacy of infrastructure, road access, the effect on drainage in an area which has already required substantial flood prevention measures to be put in place, but these are not the concerns I wish to voice.

I find it strange that the Scottish Government has seen fit to stage this appeal hearing as a series of four meetings, none of which takes place in our own village (which has more than one suitable venue), but are all scheduled to take place on weekdays at 10 am in Lennoxtown – a place that has no public transport links to our village, and at a time most working people will be unable to attend.

If the Scottish Government overturns the council's decision, that would be rank hypocrisy, undermining local democracy.
