It’s been a good week for ... celebration

The staff at Drakies Primary School in Inverness are stars. And so are the pupils.

The school’s appreciation of diversity made the headlines when they tweeted a clip of the film score This Is Me from The Greatest Showman. The result was duly praised by the stars of the movie. Hugh Jackman said it was “awesome”. The actor retweeted a video showing the pupils singing along with the inclusive message.

Now, 20th Century Fox, who made the movie, has said it will pay for a trip for the entire school to see the film at the local cinema.

Drakies has a roll of about 230 pupils.

That’s some bucket of popcorn.

It’s been a bad week for ... celebration

Birthday cakes fill me with dread.

I pride myself with subjecting our son to a homemade effort every year. (There have been 21.Yikes!) Sadly, I can’t confirm that the results have ever resulted in pride. But the cakes happened. Somehow. Often at midnight. Badly.

Over the years, he’s played the game, blowing out the wobbly candles on the wobbly cake with gusto and not mentioning that everything was sliding south (and wishing, please Mum just BUY a cake next year). The lashings of blue butter icing didn't really make him feel sick or go hyper. Never. Allergies? We flew in the face of such considerations. Eat your cake, son, and we’ll scrape you off the ceiling afterwards. Such responsible parenting.

I applaud Lara Mason, from Walsall, who spent more than 100 hours crafting child-sized cakes to celebrate the first birthday of her twins Lily and Lyla.

The edible version of her daughters was made from 44 eggs, 2.2kg of flour and 4kg of butter icing (not blue, possibly pink).

"It's the most critical I have ever been while making 'cake people' because I feel like I did such a good job making them so cute in the first place," Mason said.

Cute, blue, pink. Who cares? Let’s just all enjoy cake. And learn a lesson from Drakies.
