IF James Robb (Letters, June 14) can name any political party whose members and supporters want both independence and the retention of Trident, I will concede that I erred in claiming "all supporters of independence want a written constitution banning nuclear weapons from Scottish land and waters". Until he does so, I remain vindicated.

His assumption that independence would involve the same quagmire of lies and evasions as Brexit, shows that he doesn't really understand what the word means. The litmus test of independence is control over the life and death question of war and peace. Without that, we do not have in dependence. This is our present plight.

This is not an "academic" debate as he claims but a fundamental statement of principle.
