THE Tech Nation report which found the digital economy is booming in Scotland provides reassurance the country is well placed to capitalise on the opportunities created by the technology revolution engulfing the world.

The Government-backed body’s findings underline the scale of the benefits produced for the economy by a sector that generated £3.9 billion sales last year and provided growing numbers of high value jobs.

While Glasgow and Edinburgh account for around half the total £3.9bn sales, with £1.1bn turnover each, the study found the benefits of the sector’s growth extend well beyond the two main cities.

With £0.2bn sales Dundee wins praise for the scale of creativity and innovation in the city. Some £1.5bn sales are generated in areas of Scotland outside the three cities.

But the report also identifies 27 tech clusters in the UK outside Scotland. All will be vying to win the favour of international investors and firms that could help local players maximise their potential.

London dwarfs all other clusters, with total sales of £64.1bn.

Oxford and Cambridge generated revenues of £1.8bn and £2.4bn, helped by the strength of their universities. However, Glasgow and Edinburgh outperformed the Oxbridge centres in terms of the numbers of tech sector business births.
