“And here comes President Trump now, holding the hand of Her Majesty the Queen as he guides her to the first tee at Balmoral. Mr Trump invited the Queen to witness his swing at close hand and she graciously accepted.

“The Trump family have installed themselves at his prestigious golfing resort on the Aberdeenshire coast nearby, where he will shortly be hosting his Presidential pro-celebrity golf match before an invited audience who have paid £1,000 for the privilege.

“Mr Trump insists he is not using his visit to promote his golfing investments here and at Turnberry, but tens of thousands of demonstrators have pledged to disrupt the event at the Menie estate.

“Earlier, the First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon refused to shake hands with the President following his tweet that this “stuck up little country”, meaning Scotland, “should be kissing my a** in gratitude”. Meanwhile MEPs in Brussels have called for sanctions against America for measures which breach international conventions on human rights and treaties on refugees and asylum…”

No, it just can’t happen. Donald Trump’s state visit to the UK will be a disaster on so many levels that you fear for the sanity of Theresa May, in having invited him. The US President’s ban on Muslims entering the US – and let’s face it the ban covering seven Muslim states is effectively that – has outraged the democratic world, as has his moratorium on refugees. The only people happy about it are the Islamist fanatics, the very “bad dudes” Mr Trump wants to keep out.

He has violated the US constitution on numerous counts including depriving people of their liberty without due process and discriminating on grounds of race and religion. He has also launched a trade war with Mexico, endorsed torture and promised to renege on international agreements on climate change. His belligerent posture in South East Asia and pledge to scrap on the Iran nuclear deal constitute a danger to world peace. There is already talk in Congress about his possible impeachment.

Yet this rogue President is to be accorded the highest British honour available to any foreign leader: a full-scale state visit including a reception at Buckingham Palace, riding in the coach with the Queen and an opportunity to address both houses of parliament. He has reportedly made a raft of additional requests ,including access to the nine-hole golf course at the Queen’s estate at Balmoral. He will assuredly be coming to Scotland, if for no other reason than that his mother was born on the Isle of Lewis.

This visit is hugely unpopular and well over a million have signed a petition to ban Donald Trump from Britain. A similar petition was compiled in 2015, and endorsed by the First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, after her then International Development Secretary Humza Yousaf said that Mr Trump was guilty of “hate crime”. She now faces a very difficult choice, should he come, of alienating the United States or swallowing her principles.

I argued against that petition on the grounds that banning people you disagree with is not the democratic way; you argue with them instead. However, this time I agree.

Mr Trump is beyond rational argument. And a state visit cannot be seen as any thing other than a tacit endorsement of his behaviour. Britain’s national interest will be damaged, not just among the Muslim nations, but among countries who defend the treaties and conventions that Donald Trump is violating.

His visit here is arguably a threat to public order. We have already seen the massive demonstrations in America and they will be replicated here as activists flock from all over Europe to express their opposition.

Theresa May has made Britain a prime target for retaliation from Islamic State. This is the worst thing about the President’s immigration policy. As was the case in the Iraq war, this behaviour will only embolden terrorists and recruit more naïve young men and women to the cause of Jihad.

It is true that Britain has entertained undemocratic figures in the past, like President Xi of China. But two wrongs don’t make a right. And anyway, Britain supposedly has a special relationship with America which should be a two-way street.

If this is the cost of gaining a better trade deal then the price is too high.

The White House should be informed that Her Majesty shall be unavailable for visitation until the US rejoins the civilised world.
