A Play, A Pie and A Pint - the series of lunchtime plays staged at Oran Mor in Glasgow- began 10 years ago and since then there have been more than 300 productions featuring established names such as Robbie Coltrane and David Hayman as well as bright new acting talent.

The idea has also gone international, with Oran Mor plays being produced in Sweden, Norway, Turkey and Venezuela.

And now two productions that started out at Oran Mor are transferring to Broadway.

Clean by Sabrina Mahfouz and A Respectable Widow Takes to Vulgarity by Douglas Maxwell were both hits last year, featuring strong performances and classy direction.

The former told the story of a trio of streetwise female criminals, while the latter got big laughs from the subject of bad language.

What they both proved was that innovative, inventive and experimental theatre from the best contemporary writers can be hugely popular too, and the plays' transfer to New York is a fitting way to celebrate 10 years of one of the most encouraging and exciting successes of Scottish theatre.
