2014 will be a year to remember for Glasgow, not just for sport but for music.

A stellar line-up has been announced for Radio 1's Big Weekend on Glasgow Green on May 24 and 25. It includes Coldplay, One Direction, Katy Perry, Kings of Leon, Ed Sheeran, Bastille, Pharrell Williams and Paolo Nutini.

The event is part of the BBC's Commonwealth Games offering, but Glasgow is recognised as a powerhouse for music. Radio 1 controller Ben Cooper, describing the festival line-up as probably the best in the world this year, paid tribute to Glasgow as one of the world's great music cities.

It is not only a creative centre. It is also a key fixture on the touring circuit for megastars. The famous Glasgow Apollo, where acts included the Rolling Stones and The Clash, may have gone but, today, big-name acts play a range of venues of differing size and character, including the new Hydro, said to be the world's fifth busiest arena, the Clyde Auditorium, the beloved Barrowlands, King Tut's, Nice N Sleazy and many others. This year is an opportunity to remind the world why Glasgow is such a destination city for music lovers.
