Of course it is not everyone who would want a giant grey and silver Loch Ness monster wearing a tartan bonnet in their back garden.

But, as The Herald reports today, a private individual has indeed bought Nessie, or at least the Nessie that made an appearance in July's Commonwealth Games opening ceremony.

Some of the ceremony's giant Tunnock's teacakes have also been sold and, in time, strips of the running track from Hampden will be auctioned off to interested - and presumably wealthy - individuals. If you want the Tartan truck that John Barrowman rode on, that is for sale too. There is even a Clyde or two round the back for anyone really interested.

This sell-off is a sign that the Games' organisers remain committed to the idea of value for money, even though Glasgow 2014 has been and gone. The money raised by the auction of bespoke memorabilia will go towards the cost incurred in running the Games.

It is to be hoped that some of the memorabilia will find its way into the hands of Glasgow's museums. In years to come the city will no doubt want to celebrate the achievement of this year. It would be a pity if there were no giant teacakes to hand to do just that.
