I WAS pleased to learn that ScotRail has improved the timekeeping of its trains during the month to January 7: nine out of 10 trains arrived within five minutes of their schedule (“ScotRail chief hits back as more trains arrive on time”, the Herald, January 13). However, pardon my scepticism. During the aforesaid period, I occasioned to be on a late-running train when the driver made the following announcement: "As this train is running late, we will not be stopping at stations X and Y. Passengers wishing to travel to X or Y should alight here and wait for the next train". So whilst the train might arrive at Z in a more timely fashion, thereby improving the statistics, passengers for X and Y would arrive even later.

An interestingly creative approach to solving the timekeeping problem, but one unlikely to foster passenger approval.
