YOUR article in the Arts magazine (“A century of scat … with a tartan hat”, April 21) brought back memories of seeing Ella Fitzgerald at the Odeon, Renfield Street, Glasgow, in 1964. On the way home I spotted her by chance in the lobby of her hotel surrounded by some fairly hefty minders. I approached her and asked her to sign my programme. Not only did she sign it, she gave me a kiss and a hug and said “Honey ain't you cute.” The first and probably the last time I have ever been that way described.

Marilyn Monroe was instrumental in getting Ella a stint at the Macambo Club in Los Angeles where the former sat every night. So, as a bonus, the hand that touched me had also touched another great legend...
